River Ducks. January.

My school’s winter break

Having read already

Two Tarzan novels by Burroughs.

Wanting an outing but not alone.

Nearby Buddy on a trip.

Dad picked a Tuesday.

Slower day at his store

Home and packing for us

Lunch. Sandwiches

Thermos with hot drinks.

Chose the Thames River

Up by the university

Frozen over but

Thawed where storm sewers

Vented out.

And there they came

River ducks.

Mallards, mergansers.

Male female all ages.

Chuttering, yanking

Spitting’ chasing

Feet up dunking.

Our laughter we suppressed

Hunting but no bullets.

Only binoculars for

Father and Son

Invigorated and together.
